Basically, therapy should be carried out according to the stage. To do this, a so-called “staging” is first necessary. Here, studies such as
- Computed tomography (slice X-ray),
- PET-CT (weakly radioactive sugar marks cancer cells),
- Bronchoscopy (mirroring the airways) and
- Mediastinoscopy (mediosmoscopy)
the exact extent of the disease is recorded.
Early stages are then operated on directly. Operations in very advanced stages usually cannot improve survival, so chemotherapy, possibly in conjunction with radiation therapy, is the domain here.
The middle stages - when the lymph nodes in the mediastinum or at the root of the lung are affected - are treated according to modern concepts, combined with surgical removal and chemotherapy (before or after the operation).
