Sarcoma is a malignant tumor that arises from the supporting or connective tissue. Supporting tissue includes, for example, our bones, muscles and also fatty tissue. Sarcomas are very rare tumors and account for less than 1% of all new cases per year in Switzerland.

A GIST is a soft tissue tumor of the gastrointestinal tract. GISTs most commonly occur in the stomach.

The diagnosis of a malignant tumor is a drastic event for every patient. First, the diagnosis must be confirmed, which entails many examinations. This time is usually characterized by fear and uncertainty about the future. Once the results are there, a team of specialists will develop an individual treatment plan for you. The results of the clarifications and healing options through therapies will then be discussed in detail with you.

To confirm the diagnosis and prevent the spread of the sarcoma /GIST various investigations are being carried out to ensure this. Suspicious masses are first evaluated through x-ray examinations. In a further step, a tissue sample of the tumor is often required, from which the type of tumor can be precisely determined and statements about whether it is benign or malignant can be made.

As soon as all the results are available, they are assessed by specialists from all disciplines, the best possible therapy is determined and initiated as quickly as possible.

Treatment depends on the diagnosis. Surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy is usually associated with physical limitations and psychological stress. However, it is still often perceived as more pleasant than the time before the start of therapy.

After therapy has been completed, a follow-up plan is put together with the aim of detecting a relapse of the disease early. This ensures regular care even after therapy.
