Understanding altruism at the end of life |
Beschreibung |
Over the past ten years, Switzerland has taken steps to promote a better implementation of palliative care and the end of life through an active policy on the national level. Nevertheless, patients are by and large still seen as recipients of care provided by competent and compassionate health professionals and relatives. This places the patients from the outset in a passive position, with little opportunity to be perceived as autonomous and active agents who, by themselves, care for others. Given the conspicuous lack of this different perspective on patients at the end of life, we strive to investigate the concept of patient altruism, defined here as a personal and intentional interest in improving the wellbeing and welfare of others - at an individual, group or societal level. |
